About the Performance
The stars of North Carolina Dance Theatre are sure to shine in A Night At The Movies. Presented in the intimate Booth Playhouse, A Night At The Movies brings together the works of three choreographers - Mark Diamond, Nicolo Fonte and Dwight Rhoden - who are creating dance works inspired by different movies.

Mark Diamond’s piece, Immortal Design, is inspired by the 1934 movie Death Takes A Holiday. “The film is like a piece of artwork, with its beautiful black and white film techniques of the 1930s, and the script delivery in the film is very poetic,” said Diamond, program director for NC Dance Theatre 2. The film was remade in 1998 and titled Meet Joe Black.

Diamond’s piece was first performed in Chautauqua, N.Y., in July 2007 under the title Shadows. “I am changing the title to Immortal Design to better reflect the life and death subject matter of the story,” said Diamond. He also says there will be an interplay with the original film, Death Takes A Holiday, being projected upon the dancers. Immortal Design is set to the first movement of Johannes Brahms Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98.

Choreographer Nicolo Fonte, who last choreographed Brave! for NC Dance Theatre, is presenting a world premiere based on movies by the legendary Alfred Hitchcock including Psycho, The Birds and Vertigo.

Also presenting a world premiere is Dwight Rhoden, drawing inspiration from the 1958 movie Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Rhoden is resident choreographer for NC Dance Theatre and co-director and founder of Complexions Contemporary Ballet in New York City.

***Recommended for mature audiences.***
Similar to the cinematic works that inspired the ballets, themes of violence and sexuality may be represented. Because NC Dance Theatre presents a variety of programming, including family-friendly selections, the Company makes this distinction to help its audiences choose performances that will be most enjoyable for them.
