From Shindig’s "lickety-split technique,” to the beautiful and classic Cinderella, and from the contemporary Innovative Works, to Twyla Tharp’s ballroom sensation Nine Sinatra Songs, the 2009-2010 Season is full of Magnificent Moves.

In January 2010 North Carolina Dance Theatre will celebrate its new performance home, the Knight Theater, with a spectacular gala, Light the Knight, and in March 2010 Cinderella will be the first performance series in the new theater.

These are performances some of the dancers are most looking forward to:

“I can't wait to see what choreographer Mark Diamond comes up with for Once Upon A Time. I am very intrigued by his idea, and he is always so wonderful at telling a story and finding amazing music.”

“I’m looking forward to performing Nine Sinatra Songs. It’s an audience favorite and very rewarding to perform. Plus, I get to wear shiny shoes!”

Innovative Works is a performance I always look forward to because of its potential for creative opportunities and because it’s different from our other performances.”

“I’m looking forward to Alonzo King's MAP. It is one of my favorite ballets. The music is hauntingly beautiful. Mr. King challenges audiences to experience unfamiliar and exciting levels of dance. I love that he inspires dancers to find more depth in their work.”

Which performance are you most looking forward to and why? Let us know and you will be entered to win a drawing for a Dance Theatre t-shirt and water bottle.

Center for Dance Groundbreaking

Hugh McColl Jr., Patricia McBride, Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux

and Jane McColl

In April, Dance Theatre broke ground on its new 34,000 square foot facility on 701 North Tryon Street in Uptown Charlotte. Hugh McColl Jr., who led the capital campaign for the building, announced the new facility will be named the Patricia McBride and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance, after Dance Theatre’s artistic leaders. The name had been kept a secret, and McBride and Bonnefoux were both shocked and thrilled!

US Airways recently announced it is awarding Dance Theatre $100,000 towards the Center for Dance’s capital campaign. This gift from US Airways joins those given by the Knight Foundation, Arts & Science Council, Bank of America Charitable Foundation, and generous supporters and board members to make the new Center for Dance possible.

So You Think You Can Dance

Former NC Dance Theatre 2 member and Company apprentice, Caitlin Kinney, has made it to the top 12 on the hit Fox show So You Think You Can Dance. Dance Theatre wants Caitlin to remain in the competition, so be sure to tune to Fox on Wednesday nights at 8 PM to support Caitlin and the other dancers. And don’t forget to vote! Visit voteforcaitlin.com for more information.

Dancer Mia Cunningham Retires After 18 Seasons

Mia Cunningham’s 18-season career was celebrated in a pre-performance ceremony in May. Cunningham was honored with a photo slideshow, and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, Patricia McBride and current and former Dance Theatre company members reminisced with the audience about their time performing with Cunningham.
