Repertoire & Program Overview
Mark Diamond's City South
Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux's I'm With You
Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux's Shindig
Implemented by the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Cultural Resources, cARTwheels II is a vibrant touring program designed to enhance student learning through the arts.
As part of cARTwheels II, North Carolina Dance Theatre is presenting Under Southern Skies. The performance celebrates the music and artists of the South and reflects on the ever-changing landscape of the region. Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux's Shindig, is a rollicking ballet set to traditional bluegrass music performed live by the Greasy Beans. Bonnefoux's contemporary duet, I'm With You, is set to ballads by Christine Kane and expresses themes of joy, journey and love. Mark Diamond's City South, with music by the Grammy®-award-winning group Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, is inspired by young people and their urban lifestyles in an ever-growing southern city.

Professional Development for Teachers
Dance Theatre’s Primary Educator Enrichment Program (PEEP), an innovative professional development program, offers training to public school educators and special area teachers. The program supports classroom teachers by developing curriculum resources, educator guides, and by offering in-service training. During these workshops, teachers participate in a variety of movement classes and are introduced to sample lessons from Dance Theatre’s revolutionary Capturing Creativity curriculum units. General education teachers learn through active participation, how to use dance and movement activities in partnership with their lessons in math, literacy, social studies and science. Classroom management, assessment and lesson development also are considered.
Requirements:
- A clean, clear, open space that has enough room for portable chairs for participants to sit in (no desks) and some space to move around in. It could be a classroom, an auditorium stage, or a gym/multi-purpose room (depending on the number of workshop participants)
- Maximum of two workshops in one day if they are within the same venue or very close geographically.
- Preferable to conduct the teacher workshops after school hours or in the evening on a weekday.
- Maximum 50- 60 teachers at one time depending on the size of the venue.
- Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes to workshop.
Participants will receive a Shindig lesson plan.
