notes: The poetic 1934 black and white film, Death Takes A Holiday and its modern remake, Meet Joe Black, inspired this ballet. The character of Death takes on human form in order to experience what it is like and to understand why mortals fear him. He also experiences the ultimate emotion of love. The personification of Death represents destiny and the mortality of human life we must all face.

Although it doesn’t seek to be a literal interpretation of the original movie, its inspiration is derivative of the original characters in the movie, and the impending tension and crisis present within this family structure. This World Premiere explores the complex dynamics of the relationships of each these players, as it exposes the unfolding drama of a family’s dysfunction and the untruths that have lead to this breakdown, ultimately en route to truth and reconciliation.

notes: Finding inspiration in three of Alfred Hitchcock's most acclaimed films, Fonte's work evokes the director's apparent need to control and subsequently “destroy” his female leads. By weaving together story lines from Vertigo, Psycho and The Birds Fonte explores the films’ subtexts and their frequently used motifs to convey parallels between the director’s private longings and their cinematic correlatives. In bringing this world to life Nicolo enlists the rich and memorable music of Bernard Herrmann, Hitchcock's frequent collaborator and one of the most acclaimed composers of cinema.

Fonte’s premise for the ballet is mainly inspired by the 2008 Donald Spoto book, Spellbound by Beauty, Alfred Hitchcock and his Leading Ladies.
