Charlotte, N.C. - North Carolina Dance Theatre School of Dance presents its Summer Repertory Performance July 31, 2009, at the Booth Playhouse. The performance displays the hard work of over 100 talented students from around the world enrolled in the summer program.
The Summer Intensive Program is designed to challenge and encourage the serious dance student, and classes are offered at three levels for ages 11-22, in three to five week sessions. This year, 109 students participated, including those hailing from across the nation as well as three foreign countries.
“Enrollment in our Summer Intensive Program exceeded expectations, with 28 more students attending this year,” says School of Dance Director Darleen Callaghan. “We are over capacity in our three studios and look forward to next year when we will be in the Patricia McBride & Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance. The Center has six studios and will increase the number of students we are able to invite to attend Summer Intensive.”
This year’s faculty is an impressive assortment of dancers formerly involved with other well-known dance institutions such as American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Atlanta Ballet and Hungarian National Ballet. Also, from July 16-18, NC Dance Theatre’s president and artistic director, Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, taught several classes.
The Summer Intensive Program culminates with the Repertory Performance. This year’s performance includes Excerpts from Etudes, a classical ballet staged by Terrence Orr and Marianna Tcherkassky, as well as contemporary ballet choreography by Gerald Ebitz, Amy Price and others. “The Summer Repertory Performance is an evening of dance with great variety, highlighting the strengths of these talented young dancers from around the world.”
