Under Southern Skies

Shindig, performed live with the Greasy Beans, Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux
City South, Mark Diamond
Moody Booty Blues, Dwight Rhoden

In Under Southern Skies the internationally lauded North Carolina Dance Theatre celebrates the music and traditions of the South. Each of the dynamic pieces explores an aspect of what makes the South, its artists and the culture of the region unique.

Shindig
This rollicking ballet, set to traditional bluegrass music performed live by the Greasy Beans, leaves audiences smiling and clapping along. When Dance Theatre performed Shindig at the Joyce Theater in 2004 The New York Times wrote “a lively mix of toe shoes and bluegrass set the audience cheering at the Joyce Theatre.”

City South
Mark Diamond’s City South, with its high energy and a contemporary flare, is set to the music of the Grammy®-award-winning group Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. This work is inspired by youthful professionals and their exciting lives, taking place in an ever-growing southern city.

Moody Booty Blues
Dwight Rhoden’s Moody Booty Blues, is a gritty, up tempo piece, featuring the electric blues music from such artists as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Muddy Waters. Critic Kate Dobbs Ariail wrote that during Moody Booty Blues “the audience was laughing with pleasure, and the dancers were grinning and shaking that thing…”
