North Carolina Dance Theatre has many opportunities for your school to become involved with our outreach programs, from a one-time performance or class to an in-depth residency program.
Below are some common questions and answers about our programs.
How do I get NC Dance Theatre to come to my school?
First, contact us by phone or email. We are happy to discuss with you your interests and our programs, and help to create a program that will meet your needs.

What educational programs does NC Dance Theatre offer?
We have many options, depending on your interests.
We can bring NC Dance Theatre 2 members to your school to present a lecture demonstration introducing students to elements of dance and presenting excerpts from classical and contemporary repertory.
We can bring teaching artists or company members to your school to teach movement classes, in partnership with an existing dance program or as part of the general education curriculum.
You can also bring students to us by attending a Behind-the-Scenes Field Trip at NC Dance Theatre Studios or an Educational Theater Performance at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.
How are Dance Theatre’s programs funded?
Our programs are funded through a variety of sources. Our lecture-demonstration tour, neighborhood schools program, and Middle School performance program are funded by ArtsTeach grants to NC Dance Theatre and are offered at no charge to participants.
For other residency programs, the school is able to seek funding, such as their own ArtsTeach grant, and then contracts with NC Dance Theatre to provide services. For lecture demonstration performances at schools not on our tour list for the school year, the school or PTA can contract with us separately to bring the performance.
For our Educational Theater Performances at the North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, each student and teacher attending must purchase tickets. These are offered at a cost much lower than regular ticket prices.
We receive some government and corporate support, which enables us to develop and operate our programs, so the fees that schools contribute are often much lower than the actual cost of presenting the program.

How do I apply to be in one of your funded programs?
Only CMS schools are eligible for our Neighborhood Schools program. Please contact us to discuss this program and your interest. We will come out to meet with you at your school and begin the planning process.
What is the cost of a NC Dance Theatre program at a school?
The cost depends on the type of program, length and frequency. The school’s location and distance from Charlotte is another factor. Please contact us to discuss fees and funding opportunities.
Does the school have to have dance classes to be part of a NC Dance Theatre program?
No. Many of the schools we work with do not have dance programs, or are in the early stages of developing a dance program.
How do you prepare students and teachers for your programs?
Educator’s Guides are provided to all teachers who have a class participating in one of our performances, with information about the performance and pre- and post- performance activities.
Through our Dance Educator Enrichment Program (DEEP), teachers learn firsthand how to use dance and movement activities in partnership with their school curriculum in math, language arts, science, or social studies.
What do teachers have to do as part of a residency program with Dance Theatre?
Teachers are expected to be active participants in Dance Theatre’s programs. Collaboration between the school’s teachers and Teaching Artists is crucial to the success of a residency. Teachers typically attend 1-2 planning meetings and a professional development workshop prior to the start of the residency. If at all possible, teachers are part of the classes with the Teaching Artist, and they also help to assess and evaluate the program.
