Class Descriptions

Students complete a traditionally structured ballet class barre and center floor work. More challenging steps are introduced with an emphasis on musicality, body alignment and spatial awareness.
Jazz 1 Ages 7-9
Students learn rhythm, syncopation, isolation and improvisation in this introductory class. Basic jazz vocabulary and technique are taught and individual expression and style are encouraged. Students gain strength, flexibility, endurance and coordination while dancing to the upbeat music of today.
Ballet 2 Ages 9-12
Required three days per week at same location
This class is designed to increase the level of technical proficiency for barre and center floor work. A continuing emphasis is placed on musicality, joy of movement, body alignment and overall strengthening.
Jazz 2 Ages 9-12
This class builds on the basic jazz vocabulary and technique introduced in Jazz 1. Students continue learning rhythm, syncopation, isolation and improvisation. Strength, flexibility endurance and coordination are increased.
Modern 2 Ages 9-12
Students learn specific movement vocabulary from the major modern dance techniques, such as Horton, Limon, Cunningham and Graham. Complexity in movement combinations is developed along with a more expansive use of space.
Beginning Pointe Ages 10-12
This class builds the articulation of the feet and ankles while also building physical strength. This is the foundation that supports more advanced work in the higher levels. Students also learn how to purchase and care for their pointe shoes.
Youth Ballet Ages 10-13
Required two days per week
A traditionally structured ballet class for students with little or no ballet experience. Class emphasizes musicality, joy of movement, body alignment, overall strengthening and fun combinations while introducing the French terminology of ballet.
Boy's Dance Ages 7-10
Required two days per week
A class for young men to explore the art of dance in an all male environment. Strengthening, stretching, muscle coordination and musicality are all emphasized through a variety of dance styles. Open to boys ages 7-10 by audition only. Previous dance experience not required.
Dress Code
In the proud tradition of classical ballet and in encouragement of each dancer’s positive self-image, we strive to have a clean, uniformed appearance for all our students. Please help us achieve this goal by purchasing leotards, tights and ballet shoes that match our dress code requirements and by fixing your child’s hair for class in the appropriate manner as listed.
School of Dance dress code attire may be purchased at 25% off the retail price by calling tutu.com at 704.542.2433 or by visiting their website. Morris Costumes (4300 Monroe Rd, Charlotte, NC, 28205) also carries School of Dance dress code attire.
