Director of Development
Reports to: Executive Director
Employment status:  Regular Full-Time

North Carolina Dance Theatre is seeking an experienced professional fundraiser to serve in a senior staff position, leading the development department and overseeing all development programs and initiatives. This position is responsible for ensuring maximum contributed revenues from individual, corporate, foundation, and government donors for an established and growing regional dance company.

North Carolina Dance Theatre is the Southeast’s premier repertory dance company under the artistic leadership of Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux and Patricia McBride, both celebrated New York City Ballet alumni. The company operates on an annual budget of approximately $4 million.

North Carolina Dance Theatre presents five major productions each season, including a presentation of Nutcracker in December, both in its home city of Charlotte and on tour. The company receives major support from the Arts & Science Council of Charlotte/Mecklenburg, Inc., which is continually ranked in the top five community fundraising efforts throughout the country.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Development is responsible for advancing the mission of North Carolina Dance Theatre; maximizing contributed revenue; strengthening the relationships within its community; building and managing effective, strategic, and collaborative development programs including grant proposal execution; overseeing departmental financial tracking, reporting, and forecasting; ensuring the ethical handling of information; and participating in company planning initiatives to develop and achieve maximum contributed and earned revenue goals.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS
• Bachelor degree in the arts or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
• Successful experience in fundraising, relationship building, and sales
• Demonstrated track record of managing contributed revenue programs and personnel, with successful annual results
• Outstanding interpersonal and oral communication skills and an ability to work cooperatively with a broad range of individuals
• Sound judgment and decision-making skills, and ability to solve problems and resolve issues
• Attention to detail, strong organizational and analytical skills
• Database management
• Ability to lead, coach and motivate staff employees, peers, and colleagues
• Skillfully communicate expectations to staff and effectively deliver regular, specific, and objective feedback

Development Intern
Reporting to the Donor Relations and Stewardship Coordinator, the Development Intern is responsible for assisting with planning, implementing and coordinating special events specifically, but not limited to, the 2009 Annual Gala, McColl Room receptions, Sneak Previews, Opening Night Insiders receptions and Education & Outreach events.  He/she will partner with the development staff to determine best strategies for effective stewardship of donors; maintain ongoing and active networking with internal and external constituencies important to North Carolina Dance Theatre.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Negotiate and plan special events and receptions.
  • Process Acknowledgements and time-sensitive correspondence to individual donors.
  • Work with the direct report and Director of Development to design, document, and implement a systematic and integrated donor relations program that encompasses donor recognition events, annual campaign status reports, and recognition conventions. 
  • Devise and use consistent, accurate and appropriate information-sharing mechanisms for stewarding prospects and donors.
  • Proactively support the stewardship responsibilities of the development staff by assisting in establishing and coordinating individualized stewardship plans for donors.
  • Participate in the fund raising efforts of the department to include assuming responsibility for specific prospects, projects or campaigns as assigned; initiate and maintain contact with donors and prospective donors for cultivation and solicitation purposes.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of the annual fundraising events and performance-related corporate receptions.
  • Work collaboratively with the development staff to compose letters, compile appropriate invitation lists, engage featured program participants, create programs and provide program materials, and create and/or obtain donor awards and recognitions.
  • Recommend and coordinate publicity of major gifts and donors with the development, marketing and communications team (both print and web-based publications).
  • Manage production of the donor lists and information for performance playbills, quarterly/annual reports; determine the report recipients; and facilitate the mailing.

Videography Internship
North Carolina Dance Theatre seeks a Videography Intern for the Fall 2009 semester. The videography internship position is a new opportunity at NC Dance Theatre. The primary responsibility for this position will be to produce short videos documenting behind-the-scenes activity at NC Dance Theatre and promoting Dance Theatre performances, classes and events. The successful intern will leave this internship with an abundance of professional work to include in a portfolio.

Led by internationally acclaimed President and Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, NC Dance Theatre is based on strong dancers, high energy and a versatile repertoire that ranges from classical ballet to bold contemporary works.

Candidate requirements

  • Access to video camera, microphone and tripod
  • Access to video editing software
  • Experience with video camera and editing software
  • Experience formatting video for online placement

Ideal candidate will possess the following skills

  • Strong experience with video camera
  • Intermediate to advanced video editing experience
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • A creative sense

Videography internship duties will include

  • Developing a cohesive look and feel for videos based on Dance Theatre’s branding guidelines
  • Working with staff to conceptualize videos
  • Creating and maintaining a production timeline
  • Coordinating and conducting interviews with Dance Theatre performers, choreographers, production staff and others to appear in video segments
  • Helping to script videos 
  • Obtaining necessary clearances when required
  • Distributing videos online including maintaining NC Dance Theatre’s YouTube channel

The schedule for this internship will be flexible. Could include minimal weekends and evenings for special events and performances. Editing work could be done from home or school.
